JUNIOR CANES FALL HEAVILY TO HAWKS

Carolina

Momentum is a curious bird.

Often it seems that everything is going right and that nothing you do can go bad. The Canes walked into Chicago with that mindset and quickly learned that overconfidence can be a downfall.

The Canes were handed a crushing defeat, doubled up 6-3 by the Hawks, in a game the Carolina faithful fully expected to win.

"We were behind so quickly that we never really got anything rolling," said defenseman Shea Weber, who was -2 in the contest. "We had it in our heads we would go out and throw these guys around. Fraser got the ball rolling 44 seconds in and we figured we would continue that. But then they scored, and scored again, and scored again. When the intermission came we were down 4-1 and we all looked at one another like what just happened?"

The second period did not fair much better for the Canes as they quickly found themselves down 5-1 after a goal 3 minutes in. Craig Hartsburg called a timeout at that point to try and regroup.

"We were all sitting there looking at one another and coach said we needed to take it to them physically," said Mark Mancari. "I guess if we are going to lose, we need to make a statement so we made a collective agreement to play them as hard as we could for the rest of the game and at least win that point on. So the hit fest began."

Big Brian McGrattan drilled an open ice hit on Shaun Landolt early on and then received a silky pass from Colin Fraser to bury his first of the year. The Canes felt a bit of momentum as they continued to pressure the Hawks. Mancari then scored in the third to bring them within 2 but a Hawk power play put the home team up by three, a lead that would not be lost.

"We really need to step back for a second and get back that swagger we had a couple days ago," said Jeremy Colliton. "This team will not accept losing and next game, we will be taking it to whoever hardcore."
