CANES WORK ON SPECIAL TEAMS
Carolina
In the practice held yesterday, the Carolina Hurricanes were working on their power play and it looks quite different than it had in the past. The coach stood with his watchful eye and observed all the happenings.
Janne Niinimaa, a left handed offensive defenseman, has moved to the right point while veteran gunner Brendan Shanahan has gone to the opposite point. The hope is to help utilize the big cannon of Shanny while allowing Niinimaa to better run the power play as its quarterback.
Up front, the Canes have Olli Jokinen back on the top unit with the duo of Dany Heatley and Jarome Iginla to help promote a little added punch. Heatley has moved to the left side, as he had previously played more on the right.
"We wanted to switch it up a bit in practice," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "We did not like what we were seeing these past few games and we thought this could be utilizing the weaponry we have. I like having opposite shots on the point and the way Brendan can shoot it, we thought he would help open up the lanes down low where our big bodies can do the damage. I guess we will see but right now I am happy with the way they are working down there."
Also of note, Brendan Shanahan and Jeff Friesen swapped positions today. Shanahan will now be on the left wing side while the speedy Friesen will line up on the right.
"We felt that Briere needed a bit more beef with him so by putting Shanny with Doaner, we really capitalize on the passing of Briere and the grit and determination of the big boys down low."
The Canes will try and pick up a much needed win tomorrow night as they take on the Vancouver Canucks. The Nucks, who are off to a decent start, boast a lot of high end younger talent and a defense corps that could cause some difficulty for the Canes.
"Firing pucks on net. All I want is shots on net."
