CANES CONTINUE ROAD TRIP, STRUGGLES

Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes arrived in Vancouver this morning and are in preparation for what could be deemed as one of the most important games of the season. Coming off a 3-3 tie with the Boston Bruins, a club that should arguably be defeated by the Canes, the Carolina squad is looking to rebound and grab a much needed 2 point victory.

After being acquired for highly touted goal scorer Brian Gionta and an undisclosed amount of cash, Jarome Iginla looks to continue his offensive ways after a nice 2 point performance in the Bruins game in his debut with his new team.

Martin Brodeur, although not his normal stellar self, has allowed the Canes to remain in their games so far this season but much more is expected of the veteran netminder. Brodeur, who has 2 years remaining on his contract, looks to lock up another championship and the hope was he could backstop this club which was seemingly ready for the next level. So far, that has not been the case and Brodeur has been less than stellar.

Defensively, Janne Niinimaa, a defenseman who has been argued about as being one of the top defensemen in the league, has not had the type of start that was fully expected of him, and rightfully so. The talented Finn was coming off yet another brilliant season when he arrived in Carolina and now sits with zero points after 8 games. Zero points in a pile of ice minutes is simply not acceptable.

The only real bright side in the Canes trade adventures has been Ilja Nikulin, the bruising defender. Nikulin, 24, leads the Canes in hits and has been a physical force night in and night out. He is not expected to provide much offensively, but at least he is delivering what was promised.

Indeed, the Canes continue their 10 game road trip to start the season and the hope is that once the talented club gets home, their fortunes will turn. Fortunately for them, there are only two more road games remaining before getting themselves back to the friendly confines of Raleigh, assuming there will be any fans left when they get home.
