CAPTAIN LEADS CANES TO VICTORY

Carolina

With the Los Angeles Kings coming to town, the Carolina Hurricanes had to come up with a plan. The Kings, who were coming off of a 8-2 drubbing of the Clutch Champion Tampa Bay Lightning, were not going to be an easy opponent and the Canes were ready.

"We went with Theodore tonight," said coach Joel Quenneville. "We generally try to use Gherson with the Western teams but in this case, I felt we needed our vet to make it happen."

And make it happen he did. The savvy vet was outstanding throughout much of the game and kept the Canes in position to take the win. Offensively, the Canes were led by captain Shane Doan, who had a goal and 2 assists. The new shutdown line of the Triple D's, Draper, Dwyer and Doan were buzzing all night and delivered some intense hits.

"We really liked their energy tonight," said defenseman Jay McKee. "That trio is a pain to deal with in practice so I can just imagine what it is like during a game."

Also of note, newcomer Darcy Tucker scored a goal in his first contest with the Canes. Tucker, 30, played a regular shift with sophomore Kyle Wellwood and speedster Jeff Friesen and did not look out of place. Leaving the game with a plus rating and adding the goal were two big factors in Tucker's apparent happiness after the game.

"I always want to leave on a positive," said Tucker. "What better way that to have the team win and for me to get a goal?"

Canes will have the Rangers to deal with tonight in a conference matchup.
