Panthers Defeat Oilers 4-1
FLORIDA-The Edmonton Oilers did a great job of stopping the Panthers top lines but couldn't stop the 4th line of Yanick Lehoux, Mike Cirillo, Owen Nolan,Kim Johnsson and Mike Rathje. Although Nolan, Johnsson and Rathje also play on the top line it was Lehoux and Cirillo who only play on the 4th line that scored 3 of the 4 Panther goals with Nolan assisting on all three.
The Oilers actually outshot the Panthers in the first period 14-8 but it was Floridas Yanick Lehoux who scored the only goal of the period at 7:56 giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Edmonton tied the game at 6:45 of the second on newly acquired Jay Pandolfos first goal of the season and as an Oiler. Mike Cirillo gave the Panthers the lead for good when he scored the eventual game winner at 12:54.
The third was all Panthers as they out shot the Oilers 17-4. Yanick Lehoux scored his second of the game at 1:39 and Lucas Krajicek scored his first goal of the season at 7:57 for a final score of 4-1.
Roberto Loungo played another solid game stopping 25 of the 26 shots he faced and was named the games second star behind Yanick Lehoux. The games third star was Owen Nolan who with his three assists vaulted him to the top of the leagues scoring with 22 points on the season.
Nolan is having a career start this year. Owen has got at least one point in all 12 games the Panthers have played and can extend his 12 game point streak when the Panthers host the Vancouver Canucks in a couple days.
"I can't take all the credit." Nolan said about his points streak. "We have a talented team and without my team mates I wouldn't be having the kind of year that I am. I am truly fortunate to be playing with these guys. Tonight the Oilers did a great job of keeping our "star" players Ivan and Bondra off the scoresheet. Unfortunately for them our "checking line" stepped up and got the job done for us and that's what so great about this team...its not a one or two line team. We have four lines that can score and win games. Its really fun coming to work every day and playing with this group of guys."
Coach Mike Keenan has his team firing on all cyliders as his high octane offense has scored an amazing 62 goals in only 12 games which is a league high and 12 goals more then the Sharks who also have played 12 games and are currently only one point behind the Panthers for the overall lead.
