JUNIOR TRIO LEADS JUNIOR LEAGUE
CAROLINA
The Hurricanes junior squad, a team picked by many to roll at the top of the league, now sit pretty with three of the top four leading scorers in the league. Newly acquired Junior Lessard, the strong power forward currently sits atop the league with an outstanding 17 points in 12 games. Sergei Mozyakin, the crafty winger has 14 points and Jeff Carter, the slick playmaker is tied for the league lead for assists with 10 and a total of 14 points as well.
"It has been a wicked shot out of the gate," said Carter. "We figured we had a good team in preseason, but I think we fell a bit flat early on. Picking up Junior has really opened a lot of options for us. He has a knack for firing the puck and I guess the rest of us do what we got to do too. It has been a lot of fun though."
Carter, who's linemate Ryan Getzlaf has spent much of the season in head coach Craig Hartsburg's dog house, has really gone out to prove that last seasons totals were not a fluke. With 10 assists, Carter has been distributing the puck well and provided an offensive presence on the second unit. While Getzlaf has not been playing as he should, Mozyakin has really stepped up his game.
"The key is that we have guys laying for one another," said captain Brandon Reid. "Each of these guys will play hard and I think the fear of looking at one another and knowing we didn't give our all is enough. We have played inspired hockey the pas few games and I think we realized we were never as good as we thought we were."
