TUCKER AND CANES PUT "FRIEZE" ON SABRES

Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes came to play on Monday night, burying the Buffalo Sabres 8-1. Jose Theodore stood strong and turned away 33 of 34 shots while speedy Jeff Friesen notched his first hat trick of the season, giving him 11 goals in 14 games on the season. Newcomer Darcy Tucker continued his point production as well adding 4 assists in the victory.

"The guys were geared up for this one from the get go," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "We worked on a lot of things yesterday morning and I think the guys really took it to heart. We came out banging and really taking the play to the Sabres and they never could get any serious pressure on us."

Second year blueliner Brendan Bell opened the scoring with his first of the year and the Canes never looked back.

"It was great to get that monkey off my back," said Bell. "I just tried to get it on net and figured Doan would be able to get his stick on it, but somehow it snuck by. I'll take it though."

As for Tucker, this was his 9th point in 4 games since being acquired from the Edmonton Oilers. He was also a game high +4 in the contest. His new line with sophomore Kyle Wellwood and the suddenly offensive Jeff Friesen has stepped up to become the Canes most deadly line as of late. Friesen has 6 goals in 4 games with his new mates while Wellwood continues his strong second campaign as the teams number two center.

Gordie Dwyer got into a scrap with Josef Vasicek in an ugly altercation which would eventually find Vasicek trying to bite Dwyer. As the refs broke up the situation, Dwyer had let go of his man when Vasicek tried to sink his teeth into the left arm of the scrappy winger. The ref made the immediate motion for a game misconduct and upon review, Vasicek has been suspended for his action.

"I had to shake my head," said Dwyer. "I think this is the first time someone tried to bite me in a fight since I was 4."
