CANES FALL TO SECOND AS ISLANDERS WIN

Carolina

With a bit of a downward spiral fully engaged, the Canes watched helplessly as the New York Islanders took over both the conference lead and the overall lead in the standings. With a high powered offense and depth not matched by many, the Hurricane franchise had a feeling that this day would not be far.

"We had a solid run early on but when things are going well like that, you don't really take the time to figure out what needs to be improved," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "I think the guys started to get a bit too comfortable with the number one status. The season is not just 25 games though. We need to work out the kinks as they show themselves to us. I guess time will tell if this team truly is a contender or not."

The Canes offense has all but dried up as of late. Canes sniper Alexei Kovalev has received much blame for the drought, but playmaker Cory Stillman and speedster Jeff Friesen have also been less than impressive as of late.

"It is a team thing and the team will sort its way through it," said captain Shane Doan. "I think everyone can look in the mirror and say they can give a little more. I personally need to set the tone physically and I guess I just have not been that guy. Time will tell how we play through this though."

The Canes and Panthers hook up for another conference battle on Friday.
