Junior Capitals Jolted by Lightning

Cory Urquhart scored a pair of goals, but it wasn't enough for Washington as the Junior Capitals fell to the Tampa Bay Junior Lightning 4-3 on Day 49. Washington drops to 8-14-1 for the season with the loss.

The Caps got on the board first in a tightly played first period. After failing to score on two power play chances, Urquhart made it 1-0 when he scored from Sean Bergenheim and Matt Maglione at 10:12.

The action picked up in the second period, and things really got going when Lance Moynch dropped the gloves with Gionet at 4:35. Moynch beat up the Tampa player, but the drubbing only served to fire up the Lightning. Just over four minutes after the bout, Packard tied the game when he scored from Smolyninov and Fussy at 8:45, and 23 seconds later it was 2-1. Carver got the goal from Soucy and Cibak. Washington had a couple chances to tie the game on the power play, but Tampa killed off the penalties and would up with a goal of their own at 19:07 when Fussy lit the lamp from Smolyninov.

Much like the second period, the gloves dropped early in the third. This time it was Greg Mauldin fighting to a draw with Femenella at 1:58. This fight seemed to inspire the Capitals, and Zbynek Novak made it 3-2 when he scored from Jakub Cutta at 9:07. Unfortunately Tampa Bay answered with a goal of their own 6:57 later to regain a two-goal advantage. Carver scored the goal and it was unassisted. Washington pulled a goal back through Urquhart on a late power play, but it wasn't enough. Brett Carson and Maxim Orlov assisted on the final goal.

Brad Topping stopped 26 shots in the loss for the Capitals. Temmu Lassila made 25 saves to earn the win for Tampa Bay.

The Junior Capitals are back in action on Day 51 against Florida.
