Flyers, Oilers fight to a Draw
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Edmonton Oilers and Philadelphia Flyers battled to a 1-1 tie on Thursday.
In a defensive and goaltenders battle, each team was held to just one goal each. The first period was all Edmonton Oilers, and if not for Martin Gerber the team would have been out of the game after the 1st with Gerber stopping all 17 shots faced in the first period. Philadelphia scored the first goal of the game at 14:41 of the 2nd period on a goal from Peter Schaefer. That goal held up until early in the 3rd period on a goal from Paul Kariya. Shortly after this goal the Flyers sent out their energy line and they responded, Scott Parker went out looking for a dance partner and found one in Bates Battaglia. Only problem was Bates did not think this through too well as he quickly realized when Parker introduced him to his knuckles.
Late in the 3rd period Paul Kariya left the game on a high stick from Jamie Lundmark. Derian Hatcher did not like seeing his star player go down without a fight so he grabbed onto the closest player to him just shortly after the incident, the player he went after was Andre Roy and both men put up a very good fight.
The Flyers in no way should have got a point out of this game; the credit goes to 1st star Martin Gerber for his 29 save performance. The Flyers next game is Saturday vs. the New Jersey Devils.
