JUNIOR CANES RESPOND FROM LOSS WITH POWER PLAY WIN

Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes junior squad responded Friday from a loss the previous night with a big 4-2 win. Matched against the Colorado Avalanche, the junior Canes were down 2 goals early to the western conference squad, but with a couple key power plays and some more solid play from the usual suspects, the Canes rallied to victory.

Captain Brandon Reid was named star of the game with his two points, while Ryan Getzlaf and Mattias Karlsson also added two points. David Cornacchia, who had been rather invisible in recent games, came out with a huge defensive game, picked up an assist and provided a little leadership on the back end when the chips were down.

With power play goals from Getzlaf and Jeff Carter, the Canes went 2-7 and took full advantage of their opportunities to bury the Avalanche.

"We wanted our special teams to produce tonight," said head coach Craig Hartsbrug. "This is a team that can roll several options out there and at least getting pressure is absolutely key. We looked better tonight."

Nigel Dawes, the scrappy winger, has been sent off to a Speed camp to work on his skating ability. Dawes has been a big part of the new Brandon Reid, Junior Lessard combo and the duo seemed to miss his presence tonight.

"Dawes is a battler," said Reid, captain of the Carolina Hurricanes. "He goes to the net and isn't afraid of anyone. He's small, like me, but he competes as hard as anyone on this team. It's only a week though, we'll survive."
