Ottawa Beats the Lightning in a Close One

The Ottawa Senators responded to their tough schedule earlier today as they beat the defending Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning. It was an extremely close game in which both teams played solid hockey.

The first period caught the Senators sleeping, as usual after a 3 day vacation. The lightning scored at 7:13 of the period on a shot by Calder that snuck past Turek. The first period was pretty boring. The shots were 9-8 in favour of Tampa and the only two penalties were both somewhat questionable calls that sent Ottawa to the powerplay to no avail.

The 2nd period was much more intense and exciting. The Senators flew out of the gate tieing the game at 1 a piece on Teemu Selanne's fourth goal of the season assisted by Brendan Morrison. Shortly after, young Defenseman for the Sens, Ryan Whitney was hit with a vicious Elbow that put him out for the game and the rest of this week which can only be described as an upper body injury at this time. However, this seemed to throw Ottawa off their game as they took some stupid penalties and gave up a SH goal and PP goal in the span of the next 5 minutes. The goals by Savard and Varlamov put Ottawa behind 3-1. Only 50 seconds later Alexei Smirnov responded with his 3rd goal of the year assisted by Morrison and Tarnstrom.

The third period began with the Lightning up by one and the Senators down a key member of their defence core. However, this only seemed to motivate them as Tom Poti put home his 3rd goal of the year on a great individual effort. Stupid penalties seemed to be the story of this game though as Brian Pothier decided to Head-Butt Alexeev after beating him up and got himself ejected from the game. On the ensuing Power play, Michael Ryder put the game away with his 4th of the year assisted by Morozov and Morrison, for Morrison's 3rd assist of the game!

The Senators will enjoy yet another night off as they fly home to prepare for their 3rd game in a row against the Lightning and if it is anything like the first two, it could get nasty!
